The Jefferson Historical Society is one of our favorite local non-profit partners! Support their annual membership drive and read below to learn more about the history of the Jefferson Food Pantry! In April of 1956, it was announced that an Emergency Food Pantry would open in Jefferson in early June. The Committee made up of representatives from St. Mark's, St. John's Catholic, St. Lawrence, United Methodist, Kiwanis and St. Vincent de Paul decided it would open each Wednesday beginning June 4th at the United Methodist Church. To prepare for the opening, a food drive took place May 17 & 18 with boxes placed throughout the city. They were asking for donations and volunteers to help.Helen Stowe was elected President of the organization with Don Dunnington , VP. Joyce Montgomery was the volunteer coordinator and Harvey Stowe, inventory chair.A filing system was developed to prevent abuse of the free food program. People had to live in the Jefferson school district and could receive only one case of food a month and for only three times a year. Perishable food items such as milk and meats were paid for by St. Vincent DePaul which provided vouchers to be used at Red Owl.Welcome to Day Eight of the JHS Telethon! We're still at 24% of our goal. Sadly, there were no new signups yesterday. Join the Society for just $10 a year or $100 for a lifetime membership. Like every civic organization, we know we need renewal and new members with new energy and new ideas. If you enjoy these Facebook posts about Jefferson history, you'd make a great member and it's only $10. Click here jeffersonhistoricalsociety.org/membership/ for the signup page. ... See MoreSee Less
